THE SHORT ANSWER

Before Machu Picchu
2nights

A good place
to start.

Consider two nights in Cusco before continuing towards Machu Picchu: your arrival night and one full day to rest and review your route. One night calls for a tight schedule; three or four give you more flexibility.

These are the nights in Cusco before continuing, not the total length of your trip or a stay in Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Some journeys begin long before you reach the destination you have been looking forward to most. In Cusco, leaving a little space between landing and your next departure can change the pace of the whole experience.

The best choice depends on when you arrive, what you have already booked and how much you want to do before leaving. Start with those three questions and plan the rest around them.

01 · YOUR TIME, YOUR PACE

One night is a stopover.
Two, a pause.

No single number works for everyone. Compare the time you will actually have, keeping hotel nights separate from full days available to explore.

A short stop

For an early arrival with your route already confirmed. There is little room for the unexpected.

3

More flexibility

An option if you land late or want to keep rest separate from your plans in the city.

Your own way

To make room for more plans or enjoy a stay with less left on your to-do list.

03 · THE DETAIL THAT CHANGES YOUR PLAN

Your first night
is not always a day.

Arriving in the morning and arriving close to midnight are very different beginnings. Before counting activities, check when you can settle in and how much time you will leave between transfers.

IF YOU ARRIVE EARLY

You may have part of the day ahead of you, but confirm when your room will be available. An early arrival does not guarantee immediate check-in.

IF YOU ARRIVE LATE

Treat that first night as time to arrive and rest. Three nights can give you more flexibility than trying to fit everything into the following day.

If you are travelling with others, choose a pace that works for the whole group. Adding a night makes sense when it helps you enjoy your plans without turning every day into a checklist.

04 · BEFORE MOVING ON

On your last night,
get the essentials ready.

A quick check saves you searching for information first thing in the morning. Tick off what you have sorted; this checklist is only an aid on this page.

05 · GOOD TO KNOW

A few final questions.

Is one night enough before Machu Picchu?

It can fit a very tight itinerary, especially with an early arrival and confirmed bookings. Even so, it leaves little flexibility. Two nights allow one full day between arriving and your next departure.

How many nights should I book if I arrive after midnight?

Confirm with the hotel which date you need to book to check in at that hour. Arriving after midnight may require booking the night before your arrival date. Do not assume early check-in is included.

Can I leave luggage and return after Machu Picchu?

Ask about the availability and conditions of luggage storage in advance. If you will sleep outside Cusco, also confirm your departure and return dates: these may be two separate stays.

What should I ask if I leave before breakfast?

Check breakfast hours and ask whether there is an alternative for your departure. Not every service is available at all hours. Arrange check-out and transport as well.
